The loss of emotional vitality of our words through routine unfeeling usage (echoed potentially also in the fabric of our experience). It is part of art's work to break habits of complacency and renew that which is faded and jaded. Something spiky and passionate lies beyond the everyday and superficial veneer, as you illustrate so well here, Lucy. (Will you be protecting this image with a coat of varnish...?) F&V

Lucy Matta replied:

Ah, Richard! Yes...exactly!! :) - thank you for your beautiful and just description!

Artist's Description

The inspiration for this abstract came from a citation from Albert Cohen's 1968 novel LA BELLE DU SEIGNEUR: Devenus protocole et politesses rituelles, les mots d'amour glissaient sur la toile cire de l'habitude./ What has become protocol and polite rituals, tender words of love slide on the waxed canvas of habit. (my translation does not do it justice)

About Lucy Matta

Lucy Matta

I remember developing an interest for painting very early on in life while watching my grandfather in his unfinished low ceiling basement. The smell of oil paints filled the entire space as I watched attentively his every brush stroke. Although fascinated by his talent as a child I did not start painting myself until my early 30's...but have not stopped since! As a self-taught artist my knowledge of creating an interesting canvas grows with each new piece as I tend change it up a little if I get too comfortable with a style. My first collection named "Africa Collection" took its first breath the same year my daughter took hers, in 2002. I've recently started the "LuLu Collection" which I'm still having a great deal of satisfaction...
